Whey Protein: What It Actually Is, And Who Actually Needs It
The most popular supplement in every gym bag. Here's what it does, and whether you're actually one of the people who needs it.
Sodium, potassium, and magnesium regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle contraction — lost through sweat during exercise, and needing replacement particularly during longer or more intense sessions.
For workouts under an hour at moderate intensity in reasonable conditions, plain water combined with a normal diet typically replaces what's lost through sweat without needing a specialized electrolyte product.
Exercise longer than 60-90 minutes, particularly in hot and humid conditions common in much of India, or very heavy sweaters, benefit more clearly from electrolyte replacement to avoid cramping and performance decline.
A pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon, and a touch of honey or sugar in a glass of water provides a reasonably effective, low-cost electrolyte solution without the added dyes and sugar found in many commercial sports drinks.
