Whey Protein: What It Actually Is, And Who Actually Needs It
The most popular supplement in every gym bag. Here's what it does, and whether you're actually one of the people who needs it.
Curcumin, turmeric's primary active compound, has genuine anti-inflammatory properties in research — but is very poorly absorbed by the body on its own, which is a major limitation of simply eating turmeric powder for a therapeutic effect.
Piperine, found in black pepper, can increase curcumin absorption significantly — this is the actual scientific basis behind the traditional Indian practice of combining turmeric with black pepper in cooking, not just a flavor pairing.
Reasonably good evidence exists for curcumin supplementation modestly helping with joint discomfort and general inflammation markers, particularly in supplement forms specifically designed for better absorption.
Look specifically for formulations that include piperine or another bioavailability-enhancing technology — plain curcumin powder without this addition is unlikely to provide meaningful blood levels of the active compound.
